Walk through the halls of any great school, and you'll notice something almost immediately:
There's a sense of identity and pride. While that pride is built through academics, athletics, clubs, traditions, and community involvement, the physical environment plays an important role too. The spaces students learn in every day help shape how they feel about their school.

When a mascot is brought to life through a large-scale mural, it transforms from a simple logo into a powerful symbol that students encounter every day.
Recently, I had the opportunity to paint a mural featuring the Kasson Eagle at Kasson Elementary School in West Virginia. What struck me most wasn't simply the finished mural—it was watching the students react to it. They lit up every day when they saw the mural's progress. They asked questions. They connected with it, and with me as I worked. Even the teachers lit up like their students on Christmas.That reaction reminded me that murals have the ability to make students feel seen, represented, and connected to their school community.
The project was incredibly rewarding, not only because of the mural itself, but because of the response from the school community. After the project was completed, Principal McBee shared this review:
"Leah completed a beautiful mural for our school. It turned out better than I expected it even could be. She was wonderful to work with. Very professional, kind and extraordinarily talented!"
Feedback like this is what makes school mural projects so meaningful. The goal is never simply to paint a wall—it's to create something that students, staff, families, and community members can feel proud of for years to come.
Murals Foster School Pride and Inspire Creativity
Every school wants students to feel proud of where they learn. Mascot murals help reinforce that pride by creating a strong visual identity throughout the building. When students walk past a beautifully painted mascot every day, they're constantly reminded that they are part of something bigger than themselves. Whether it's an eagle, tiger, wildcat, bulldog, patriot, or another mascot entirely, the artwork becomes a symbol of shared experiences and collective achievement. The spaces they occupy influence mood, engagement, and overall experience. A vibrant mural can help transform an ordinary hallway, cafeteria, gymnasium, library, or entryway into a more welcoming and engaging environment. Instead of feeling institutional, the space feels intentional. Instead of feeling generic, it feels unique. And when students feel connected to their environment, they are often more engaged in the school community as a whole.

One of my favorite things about school mural projects is that they rarely impact only the students. Parents are more excited to visit and invest in their child's schools. Teachers find themselves working in a more beautiful workplace. Alumni develop emotional attachments to the school and the mural that live long past their times as a student. A mascot mural becomes a point of pride not only for the current student body, but for everyone connected to the school. For Parent Teacher Organizations, booster clubs, alumni associations, and school leadership teams, a mural can be a lasting investment that continues to benefit the school long after it is completed. Unlike temporary decorations or one-time events, a mural becomes a permanent part of the school's identity.
